Birthing

BIRTHING a PUG

A step by step process. I am not a VET. You may need a vet to deliver your pug babies. I am only guiding you from my EXPERIENCES.

MATING

If you are lucky enough to see when the dogs mate that's awesome. Write it down on the calendar.  They USUALLY deliver any where from 63 - 68 days later.

MATING PROCESS

According to my Veterinarian it's best to let them mate and wait two days and let them mate the second time. This does not always happen like it's suppose to in a real world. Sometimes he will mate with her three to six times. It's okay. DO NOT TRY TO PULL THEM APART!!!

NESTING

About a week before the Babies are born, the Mamma will begin to nest. She will begin to dig at her blankets making them into a nest. She may even walk or run in circles around her nest before settling in.

DISCHARGE

Before she delivers she may have a slight clear discharge from her vagina. Don't panic it's normal. There may even be a large amount of clear discharge from the vagina. That would be her water breaking. If at ANY TIME you feel uncomfortable, take you Fur Mamma to the VET...

GETTING READY

Before DELIVERY have your tools you will need ready and set aside. You will need sharp scissors, the smaller the better. CLEAN ALL YOUR TOOLS WITH ALCOHOL PRIOR TO USING. A Baby suction bulb, Dental floss, A roll of paper towels, A small plastic bag for garbage. LOTS of terrycloth towels. a clothes basket and find the place where she will be giving BIRTH. I use my bed. My dogs sleep with me so they are comfortable birthing on the bed. BUT make sure you use a water proof bed cover, because there

WHEN THE BABIES START COMING

  1. Before the pug puppy comes there will be a BULGE at the vaginal opening. I will be a darkish color, kind of purple. It will be the fluid filled sack that is surrounding the baby, protruding from the vagina. DO NOT BREAK IT!!!. If you break it chances are you will be delivering a dead baby.
  2. The Puppy should come out on it's own. This process could be up to an hour from the time you first see the sack. Don't panic, let Mother Nature take it's course.
  3. lf baby has not plopped out yet, Now would be

WHAT IF

If the baby is almost out but is breech and it's head is stuck just the tiniest bit I will gently pull the baby out. BUT  if there is any RESISTANCE STOP!!! you don't want to kill a puppy. GO to your EMERGENCY VET.

AFTER THE PUPPY IS BORN

I would say 99% of my births go extremely well. I will touch on the others later. Once the baby is out YOU need to rip the sack off of it. The pug does not have a nose, therefore it's difficult for her to rip the sack open so the baby does not suffocate.

TYING THE UMBILICAL CORD

Now that the sack is open mamma will eat it with the placenta. DO NOT get grossed out she must have this protein . NEXT hold on to the umbilical cord about an inch away from the belly. You should have had the floss cut to tie around the cord. This is a hard thing to do. It's covered in blood ans slippery. DO NOT let go of the cord as it will start to bleed and could kill the baby. Use your finger that is pressing the cord shut and place the middle of the string under it against the cord.

TYING THE UMBILICAL CORD 2

Now wrap the floss around and around the cord about 3 times . Pull it tight like a tourniquet.Tie it tight. Now with your scissors cut about another inch below it . Mamma will lick it the get it to dry up and heal. She will eventually lick off the floss.

LOSING A PUG PUPPY

Do not take it as a failure on your part if you lose a baby from the litter. Rule of thumb says one puppy will not survive out of each litter. HOWEVER I personally haven't lost one in over 3 years, Thank God...

I will tell you what I do in the sentence below.

SAVING A PUG PUPPY

The first thing to o is GENTLY suction out each nostril if the puppy is not breathing. If that does not remove the mucus, HOLD the puppy with both hands. Put it's head at your finger tips and the back legs in your palm. Now with force swing your hands down to your knees and back up into a bending position.  Repeat 4 times, hold tight to the baby in your hands. If that doesn't work try massaging it's chest or do shallow chest compressions and gently blow into it's nose and mouth at the same time.

AFTER THE BIRTH

After the fur baby is out.

NEW LIFE

Congratulations you made it through the first one. Now put the puppy on the mamma's nipple. The suckling  of the milk will stimulate the next set of contractions so she can deliver number two.

THE LAUNDRY BASKET

If you come to my house and see a Laundry basket on the bed or out of place that's because there is a litter of pug puppies in it. I tried so many different ideas. Some my own other I found during research. The BEST very best thing I have found was the plastic laundry basket. The  bigger the better.

PREPARING THE LAUNDRY BASKET

Get a regular size pillow. You can find them at Walmart for$3-$5 . Put it on the bottom of the basket. Fold a small blanket, I get mine from Walmart also for $5 or a bath towel. Place it over the pillow so the pillow stays clean. Place the puppies in there and cover them up to keep them warm while mamma has her next baby. Use the paper towels to dry off the new born baby as much as possible.

HELP!!!

I am available to answer your questions or help you through the process 24/7. Usually they go into labor around 1am.

Life is precious, enjoy every Pug minute.
